I have a lot of respect for interior designers.
They invest their efforts, expertise to make our living spaces fabulous and functional.
But many homeowners (including me) find them out of their budget. Then, there are the folks who want to make their own design decisions, using their style and preferences.
So, how can you make your space beautiful and vibrant—without approaching a pro interior designer for that?
Here, I have come up with some simple ideas to create the perfect living space that, until now, you believed only a professional could do.
Whether you want to make your room looks like a lavish hotel room or just glam up your home decor, these ideas will help you make the most of your room.
Seek Design Inspiration from Pinterest and Magazines:
You can find amazing design ideas at Pinterest you never thought of.
Search for the décor ideas that appeal to you and save the pictures to build your collection of the designs of your taste. And I am sure the collection will inspire you to create the same. Likewise, home décor websites are a plethora of ideas to jazz up your living space.
Keep one thing in mind—use the collection to seek new ideas but don’t try to put every picture or idea you find in one room.
Use 3 Shades of Color:
This is a complicated yet fun part of the process. Colors play a vital role to set the mood inside the room. Choose the scheme that appeals to you must. Or you can get an idea from your collection to know what colors are prominent in them.
Try a mix of three colors or shades which go like this—one color for walls, another color for larger pieces like couches and chairs, and then the third color that will be of accessories like a pillow, flowers, and knick-knacks.
I have used brown color for my walls while teal is the color of my furniture; and I have kept pillows and accessories in the tangerine shade. The coordination of three colors works in any combination. It also depends on the availability of natural light in your room.
Make sure to choose all three colors from the warm or cool palette of the color wheel. Warm colors include all shades of red, yellow, and orange while cool colors are violets, greens, and blues. The 3 color formula will make your rooms look more vibrant than the “all-white” shade.
Place Your Furniture Carefully:
Placement of furniture pieces can make or mar your room appeal. Sadly, most homeowners are not serious about that. Having a plethora of leggy chairs, leggy tables and minimal items make your room looks occupied and confuse the eye.
Keep these things in mind while arranging the furniture in your room:
- Arrange the furniture near a focal point of your room, such as a fireplace, TV, or large windows. Keep paths clear of obstacles
- Keep one large statement piece like armoire or cabinet and place smaller items around it.
Bring the Nature In:
This piece of writing would be incomplete if I skip about the plant decoration. Whether it’s bedroom, kitchen, or living room, the plant adds warmth, freshness, and life to your interiors. They can be the key design element. There are many beautiful plants you can bring in to accentuate your interiors. You can place fresh herbs in the kitchen and bring the succulent on a coffee table. The potted fiddle leaf fig tree complements your living room’s environment.
Art or decorative pieces:
Art pieces add sophistication to your living space. It speaks about your tastes and aesthetic sense as well. You can try a mixture of visual mediums like paintings, mixed media pieces, and sculptures. Hang your artwork at the eye level which can be nearly 60 inches from the floor. You can make the grid of the artworks by keeping 2 to 3 inches distance between frames.
And don’t forget to jazz up the gallery as it is the major statement area in the home. I have incorporated my collection in this area which includes family photos, places I’ve traveled, photography, kid’s artwork, and handwritten notes.
So, these are some design ideas you can use to decorate your living space like a pro. However, you should do it in your way by using everything of your taste. After all, it is your home and it should reflect your personality. And keep one thing in mind—don’t go overboard as you may end up with the cluttered room.
